Failed promises: The ZPVP results in 317 cars above peak-capacity, 13% higher than 2,450 parked cars

The ZPVP proposes two increases of capacity for parked cars:

(a) the construction of a 1,000-car underground parking garage on the existing Polo Field and the addition of 300 parallel parking places along Barton Springs Road; and

(b) the commensurate removal of 1,075 existing parking places (including 21 ADA spaces) from the current perimeter parking-lot network of the park.

As you can see from the spreadsheet below, the ZPVP quickly delivers a capacity increase of 12.9% above the peak-use maximum. That's an additional 317 cars above maximum.

The negative impacts of the ZPVP are:

• Removes 21 ADA accessible parking places, all located near picnic tables and natural areas of the park.

• Removes two essential surface lots needed for families to be able to access the Zilker Playscape and the Pecan Grove picnic tables. (By replacing these two essential lots with a "welcome center circular drop-off driveway," the ZPVP destroys essential access for specific populations to these historic areas of the park.)

• Increases car capacity 317 cars above peak-use goals of its own plan. The result will be increased traffic congestion in Zilker Park.  Increased traffic congestion makes it more dangerous for pedestrians, bikes and scooters.
